It seems like Hakim Ziyech will be in PSG's squad for the second leg of the 2022/23 season on loan from Chelsea, however, paperwork errors by the London club have caused the deal to fall through.
The loan deal for Hakim Ziyech to Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) has seemingly fallen through due to paperwork errors by Chelsea. Ziyech was expected to complete his move to PSG by the end of the winter transfer window (31/1).
Chelsea was pleased with the departure of the Moroccan player from Stamford Bridge, and Ziyech was expected to arrive in Paris yesterday to finalize the deal. However, at the end of the winter transfer window, PSG was unable to announce the new contract.
PSG is unable to complete the registration process for Ziyech because Chelsea sent incorrect transfer documents to PSG. According to PSG sources, The Blues even sent incorrect documents three times before the transfer deadline ended. PSG is expected to make an appeal to try to complete the transfer after the deadline, but the chances of success are low. Currently, Chelsea has not commented on Ziyech's issue. A source described the situation as a "grade-A mess".
Ziyech is expected to complete his transfer from Chelsea in January after playing in 4 matches in the Premier League this season. The Moroccan star has not scored for the London club since March of last year. Some clubs have followed Ziyech's signature after he helped Morocco reach the World Cup 2022 knockout stage. He participated in seven matches of his country in the tournament in Qatar when Morocco became the first African country to reach the knockout round.
AC Milan, Roma, RB Leipzig, and some Premier League teams including Newcastle are all interested in signing Ziyech, but he prefers PSG. Ziyech joined Chelsea in the summer of 2020 after impressing at Dutch clubs Heerenveen, Twente, and Ajax. Under the guidance of Erik ten Hag, this winger won the Eredivisie, KNVB Cup, and Johan Cruyff Shield titles during his time at Ajax.
Ziyech was also a part of the Ajax team that reached the Europa League final in May 2017 - losing 2-0 to Man Utd - and helped the Dutch club reach the Champions League quarter-finals two years later.
Ziyech won the Champions League, the UEFA Super Cup, and the Club World Cup in his two years at Chelsea. He reached two FA Cup finals and one Carabao Cup final but suffered heartbreaking defeats against Leicester and Liverpool (twice).
If Ziyech's move to PSG cannot materialize, he will have to try to help Chelsea save their season. The Blues are currently 10th on the Premier League table - 10 points behind fourth-placed Man Utd - and have been eliminated from the Carabao Cup and FA Cup. Chelsea is still competing in the Champions League, and they will face Borussia Dortmund in the Round of 16.
