Manchester City faces the risk of losing three Premier League championships titles. The question is, will Manchester United receive these titles?
After a four-year investigation, the Premier League organizing committee accused Manchester City of violating financial rules over 100 times in 9 years (2009-2018). The accusations are related to financial information, detailed revenue of the coach and players, UEFA regulations, etc.
Currently, the investigation will be transferred to an independent commission before going to court. If convicted, Manchester City may face various penalties, including the deduction of points or more severely, expulsion from the Premier League. In addition, The Citizens may also lose the three Premier League championships in 2012, 2014, and 2018.
Manchester United fans hope the club will be recognized as champions if Manchester City is punished. In the three seasons when Manchester City was champion, the Red Devils were runner-up in 2012 and 2018.
However, according to English media, even if Manchester City loses its title, the chance of it being given to Manchester United is very low. Instead, the Premier League organizing committee will not transfer the championship to any club.
Like the case of Juventus in the Calciopoli match-fixing scandal in 2006. After this club was stripped of its Serie A championship in the 2004/05 season, the Italian football association did not give it to any club. In the 2005/06 season, Juventus was penalized and pushed to the bottom of the table, so the Scudetto title was awarded to Inter (from second place to first) at the end of the season.
At this moment, Manchester City is under pressure from Premier League clubs. Many teams have requested that the Premier League Organizing Committee take strong action against Man City and want the club to be relegated.
A club representative spoke out: "If these allegations are proven, there needs to be a fitting punishment for Man City. The most appropriate punishment for them is to be relegated. We're talking about a decade with many allegations against Man City. The Premier League needs to make the right decision".
Man City is alleged to have concealed millions of pounds in income. The money was pumped from companies located in the Gulf, including airline Etihad and investor Aabar. It is believed to have support from Man City's owner, Abu Dhabi United.
Another allegation also states that Man City did not disclose the income of players over a 6-year period (from the 2010/11 season). In addition, The Citizens are also involved in many other allegations related to violating financial fairness rules in the Premier League and UEFA.
In response to these allegations, Man City asserts that they are "very surprised." The club's official website states: "Man City is surprised by the Premier League's issuance of financial violation allegations, especially after we have provided extensive and a large number of detailed documents for the investigation.
The club welcomes the examination of this issue by an independent committee, to investigate objectively with irrefutable evidence. Therefore, we hope that this issue will be resolved once and for all."
In February 2020, Man City was previously fined 25 million pounds by UEFA and banned from participating in the Champions League for violating financial fair play regulations. However, they successfully appealed. In the end, the Citizens only had to pay a fine of 9 million pounds and were still able to play in the Champions League.
