Despite Kylian Mbappe's two attempts to score against goalkeeper Sommer, both were rejected by the referee due to offside, resulting in PSG's 0-1 loss against Bayern in the first leg of the Champions League round of 16.
Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) welcomed Bayern Munich to Parc des Princes in the first leg of the Champions League round of 16 with star duo Messi and Neymar leading the attack. However, forward Kylian Mbappe, who had just returned from injury, was still on the bench, as decided by coach Christophe Galtier.
Despite the home advantage, PSG could not push forward with their attacking lineup, as Bayern Munich controlled the ball very well from the start and constantly put great pressure on the home team's defense.
The first half witnessed many shots from the visiting team, while the home team could hardly create any significant chances as their quick counterattacks from Neymar and young striker Zaire Emery were quickly stopped.
Despite dominating the game against PSG, goalkeeper Donnarumma's reliability prevented Bayern Munich from scoring any goals during the first 45 minutes.
However, the situation completely changed just 8 minutes into the second half, when Kingsley Coman scored with a one-touch shot in the penalty area after a good pass from Davies, leaving goalkeeper Donnarumma powerless as the ball flew into the net.
Trailing, PSG no longer maintained their defensive stance and instead pushed forward with their attacking lineup to look for an equalizer. At this point, Mbappe was also brought in to take advantage of his speed.
As they focused on attacking, PSG almost conceded a second goal when Musiala eliminated Mendes with a technique before passing to Choupo-Moting for a one-touch shot. Fortunately, goalkeeper Donnarumma used his fingertips to push the ball against the post.
In the 73rd minute, Mbappe demonstrated his impressive speed to penetrate the Bayern penalty area, but his shot was still unable to beat goalkeeper Sommer. Unfortunately, his follow-up shot immediately afterward was disallowed due to an offside.
In the 82nd minute, Mbappe once again managed to put the ball into the Bayern net in a completely legitimate position, but once again his goal was disallowed as VAR technology determined that there was an earlier offside by Nuno Mendes.
Just two minutes later, Messi missed an opportunity to equalize when his shot from the penalty area in a favorable position hit Pavard's leg and went out.
In the 90th minute of the game, despite Bayern Munich's Pavard receiving a second yellow card and being sent off, the remaining few minutes were not enough for the home team to score an equalizer.
