PSG suffered the second loss of the year 2023

Paris Saint Germain played as the away team at Rennes' stadium in Ligue 1 Round 19 with a nearly strongest lineup when Messi and Neymar were both in the starting lineup, while striker Kylian Mbappe was still given rest on the bench by coach Christophe Galtier. However, the host team Rennes played aggressively and caused many difficulties for PSG in both offense and defense. In the first half, only the brilliance of goalkeeper Donnarumma helped keep PSG's defense strong as Rennes played smoothly in their attacks.

Meanwhile, Lionel Messi was tightly marked and he had very few touches on the ball, causing PSG's attack to become stagnant. Both teams ultimately ended the game with a goalless draw in the first 45 minutes.

In the second half, coach Galtier was forced to bring in Mbappe in the 55th minute to refresh the attack. However, only 10 minutes later, PSG had to concede a goal from Hamari Traore's decisive shot in the penalty area that Donnarumma had no chance to save.

Trailing behind, PSG raised their lineup to seek an equalizer, but Mbappe missed a great opportunity in the 69th minute when Messi had a long pass to allow the French striker to break free and face the goalkeeper, but his shot, unfortunately, went wide. In the final minutes, despite the best efforts, PSG was unable to find the winning goal and had to accept defeat on the Rennes field.

The match against Rennes is the second defeat for PSG in the Ligue 1 2022-2023 season. It is also their second defeat in the last month, following their 1-3 loss to Lens on January 1st. PSG still leads the Ligue 1 with 47 points after 19 games, but they are now only three points ahead of Lens. Meanwhile, Rennes has risen to fifth place with 37 points.

Starting lineup:

  • Rennes: Mandanda, Wooh, Rodon, Theate, Traore, Majer (Tait, 89'), Ugochukwu, Truffert (Meling, 76'), Doue (Doku, 68'), Kalimuendo (Assignon, 76'), Gouiri (Sulemana, 89')
  • PSG: Donnarumma, Pereira (Sanches, 83'), Marquinhos, Ramos, Bernat, Vitinha (Fabian, 72'), Emery (Soler, 72'), Mukiele (Hakimi, 55'), Neymar, Messi, Ekitike (Mbappe, 55')
