Manchester City is facing the risk of being expelled from the Premier League after being accused of violating financial rules from 2009 to 2018. The allegations from the Premier League's governing body (BTC) relate to Manchester City's violation of financial regulations over 9 seasons from 2009 to 2018, and failure to cooperate with investigations from the 2018-19 season to date.
Some penalties may be imposed on Manchester City in the near future, ranging from a points deduction, and a fine, to a more severe outcome such as a drop in rank or expulsion from the Premier League this season. In theory, if Manchester City is expelled from the competition, all of its achievements at the Etihad Stadium this season may be erased and the 7 teams that gained points ahead of The Citizen this season would not be counted.
According to The Sun, Arsenal will be the team that benefits the most if they lead the standings with a gap of 11 points from the second team, and "Gunners" fans can fully celebrate their first championship since the 2003/04 season.
The 7 teams that gained points from Manchester City this season, including two competing for the championship title Newcastle and Manchester United. "Red Devils" defeated Manchester City 2-1 in January 2023, so if this result is not counted, Erik Ten Hag's team will drop from 42 points to 39 points.
Meanwhile, Newcastle will lose the points they earned against the champions from last season in August last year. However, Eddie Howe's team will be second after Arsenal, ahead of Man Utd thanks to a better goal difference.
Then Tottenham will move up to the fourth place and also the final Champions League position next season when Man City is eliminated from the tournament. Spurs are another team that took points from Man City, with Harry Kane becoming the team's top scorer in the 1-0 win on February 5th.
Other teams that have won points against Man City in the 2022-23 season include Everton, Brentford, Liverpool, and Aston Villa. Liverpool would be 10th in the rankings if it weren't for Man City, as their 1-0 win over the Etihad Stadium in October 2022 was not counted. Meanwhile, Aston Villa will overtake Liverpool, despite losing points to Man City in September last year.
Brentford is flying high, currently standing at 7th, with a stunning 2-1 victory at the Etihad Stadium in October 2022. However, "The Bees" will still be 7th and eligible for a spot in the Europa Conference League if Man City is excluded from the tournament. Everton, the team that earned a valuable point against Man City on the last day of 2022, will be 17th among the 19 remaining teams, above only Bournemouth and Southampton.
