Chelsea has made an offer to break Fernandez's contract with Benfica and turn the Argentine star into the most valuable player in the Premier League. According to The Telegraph, Chelsea made the £105 million bid for Benfica's star, Enzo Fernandez, just before the January 2023 transfer window closed.
"The Blues" have been pursuing the Argentine player for some time and are now close to completing the deal after agreeing to pay a record-breaking amount to break Fernandez's contract, making him the most valuable football player in England.
Previously, Chelsea made two offers to Benfica, in the amounts of 60 million pounds and 88 million pounds in early January, but both were rejected by the Portuguese club. The Stamford Bridge side finally accepted a fee of 105 million pounds as the release clause of Fernandez's contract with Benfica.
However, Chelsea will not pay the aforementioned amount in one lump sum but will spread out the payments, starting with a large amount and then 5 smaller payments for the remaining amount.
Fernandez agreed to Chelsea, so personal terms between him and The Blues are not a big issue. Now, the Argentine star just needs approval from Benfica's Chairman, Rui Costa, to leave.
If this transfer goes through, Fernandez will surpass the Premier League transfer record set by Jack Grealish when he joined Man City for 100 million pounds in the summer of 2021.
Enzo Fernandez will also break the transfer record at Chelsea. The Blues once spent 97.5 million pounds to sign Romelu Lukaku.
The outstanding player of the 2022 World Cup will become Chelsea's 8th transfer contract in January 2023 transfer window, after the arrival of big contracts such as Mykhailo Mudryk, Noni Madueke, and Benoit Badiashile.
Since Todd Boehly took over as chairman, Chelsea has spent 450 million pounds and will surpass the half-billion-pound mark if Enzo Fernandez arrives at Stamford Bridge.
