Erik ten Hag will be challenged with the Manchester United vs Barcelona match in the 16th round of the Europa League play-off, after losing both Lisandro Martinez and Marcel Sabitzer.
Manchester United is expected to face a difficult match in Spain, as in addition to being without Eriksen, Antony, McTominay, Van de Beek, and Martial due to injury, they will also face the loss of central defender Lisandro Martinez and midfielder Marcel Sabitzer, both due to suspension (yellow card).
Sabitzer, who recently joined the Red Devils on loan in January, received three yellow cards while playing for Bayern Munich in the Champions League this season. UEFA confirmed that the Austrian midfielder must serve his suspension when he transfers to play in the Europa League with Manchester United.
There is some comfort for coach Erik ten Hag as he has the services of midfielder Casemiro, who recently sat out in the Premier League due to a three-game suspension for a red card in the 2-1 win over Crystal Palace on February 4th.
Erik ten Hag and his team are currently fighting on four fronts: the League Cup (final against Newcastle on February 26th), the FA Cup, the Europa League, and the Premier League.
The loss of key players due to injury and suspension only further challenges the tactics of Erik ten Hag. The Dutch coach will have to figure out how to best rotate his lineup for maximum effectiveness.
Between now and the League Cup final against Newcastle at Wembley (11:30 PM on February 26th), Manchester United will first play against Barcelona in the first leg of the Europa League play-off at 3 AM on February 17th, then quickly return to Old Trafford to face Leicester City at 9 PM on February 19th, before replaying against Barcelona at 3 AM on February 24th.
Meanwhile, Newcastle is preparing for the final, with only one match (against Liverpool on February 19th).
